I am attempting to create an exit by having my player tell or ask an NPC something, and I thought I set it up correctly, but nothing happens when I try to ask/tell about the exit.

You will probably want to execute the make exit visible script. So, make the exit but toggle it as not visible. Then, when you ask about the exit, run a script to make it visible.
