Intro greetings and TypeLib.qlb question

Hello all, I'm the newest noob of the moment. I chance upon Quest and these forum just the other day, and have taken a very brief look into this apparently very cool software.

I've spent a bit of time browsing the forums to get my bearing a little bit. I see that there are some very knowledgable authors that actually share their knowledge and experience with the masses (Thank you.) I also see that the forums are 'alive' (current posts) and this gives me hope. How many times have I found an old adventure game utility that is dead and the support a mear fading ghost of better times? But not so here it seems. Cheers!

So I'll try not to seem too silly. (too late?) Bear with me, however, as I ask the first of what will hopefully turn out to be a short list of noobish type questions:

I've started tinkering around with rooms and objects and quickly came to the conclussion that I needed containers! A glancing through the forums and I find a link or two. Then I go out to the Quest folder itself and find a promising pdf file and some other files related to TypeLib.qlb. Yay! I think to myself. I'll just follow the simple instructions and add the library via the Games menu.

Alas, the download of Quest that I grabbed from the axesoftware site does not seem to actually include the TypeLib.glb library file itself! Help! Point me to a link, or MaDbRIT, if you see this, please email it to me at: mhenry00@comcast.net. I'd really like to get that library incorporated in early on so that I can learn it as I work my way through the learning curve on the Quest/QDK system overall.

Much thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to Quest!

I don't have a copy of the last bugfixed version of typelib.qlb on my work PC (new machine and not caught up with all the things I need to install yet) but once I get home this evening I'll e-mail you the latest release.

Al (a.k.a MaDbRiT)

Hey.

You explain yourself excellently and very clearly.
It will be a pleasure if I could help you in any way possible.

May I ask your age? As it seems you're too 'learned' in the English language to be younger than 20..

Have a good day, and we hope to see more of you in the future.

I'm 43, male, and Dallas, Texas is home. I played 'Adventure' and 'Colossal Cave' when they were NEW.

I was also a big fan of the Infocom games. And have watched the developement of computers and their games over these last 30 years or so. Yes, I'm an old hat with computer systems.

I've got some programming experience from way back, but these days I'm a technician and application troubleshooter, not a programmer. At least in my day job.

Anyway, I have a fondness for the text adventure genre. And when I came across Quest I just had to download it and check it out. I have a 9 year old daughter who saw me tinkering with it. We are now starting to work on a little project together. This is a good thing. She's very bright and I think teaching her the logic of programming in combination with the creativity of story telling will be a great thing for her. Not to mention that it gives us a good Daddy-Daughter project.

Families that Quest together - are Best together.

Looking forward to learning the ropes and becoming proficient with QDK AND ASL.

Thanks for the quick response!

Random, was that program named SUDS by any chance? I mentioned the software in a post in Games and Chat, if you take a look at that post you'll see how much it's hated here. Or how hated I am rather :)

Nice to see new faces though. I just hope they're friendlier with you hehe.

By 'that program' I take it you are asking what I was refering to when I said I had some programming experience in my past.

No. I saw your thread on SUDS when I was becomming aquainted with these forums, and from the sounds of it, I'm happy to say that I never saw or use it.

I was refering to just general programming experience in my past. BASIC, COBOL, a little FORTRAN (only learned it in school, never actually used it), several mainframe Command Line languages, DBase III scripting language and the like. The point I wanted to convey, is that I do have some programming theory knowledge and am not starting from ground zero. It HAS been a number of years though since I did any serious programming, so it will take me a little while to get back in the swing of things.

Also, on another note: I re-downloaded the quest235.exe and ran it again just to be sure I didn't do something silly. Sure enough, it includes the TypeLib readme, .pdf, and .asl files... but not the .qlb file itself. So the .exe package should probably be rebuilt. Unless TypeLib is not supposed to be in the basic package and only in the Pro. (By the way, I will be buying the upgrade with in the next day or so)

Either way, if the TypeLib is not supposed to be included in the basic package the perhaps removing the other TypeLib files and replacing them with an propmotional type file would be better. That would give folks an additional incentive to buy the Pro version.

If TypeLib is supposed to be included in the basic package then the .exe needs to be updated. So either way it needs to be modified.

Oh by the way... if you haven't figured it out yet, I can be a bit long winded. :D

p.s. Yeah Zork I, II, and III, HHGTTG, Leather Goddess of Phobos, you name it.

Not to worry, I've seen the likes of elexxorine before. One man's sanity stops where the next mans begins.

On topic: My cheesy mail provider chopped up some of the longer code lines and cause some issues, but I got them patched up and the typelib.asl is now loading and running without errors (yay me). Now to go and explore your type Lib! Thanks again MaDbRiT!

Yes - I'm the bad-boy of the forum...

... Well, not really.

I think Zel dropping in SUDS is a bit wrong..
With your age, I'd have expected COBOL, BASIC and fortran.. Those are the old-school business languages which kicked everything off.
Cool to know you have DB3 scripting and stuff.

There is an older typelib library - called, something-or-other.. :)
Sorry, can't remember off the top of my head.
Has containers and stuff - although not as advanced as Al's newer stuff.

Yeah, CQL. Saw that. Grabbed it. It does add containers and a few other things, but Al's typleLib is more robust.

Is there a post where Alex lists his plans for the future? upcoming upgrades? I'm curious about where he plans to go with Quest.

Take Care,

I wouldn't get too close. There's an aura of paranoia surrounding him.
