Can I still edit my game if I publish it?
EnchantedGamer31
11 Jun 2018, 11:57Guys, I am making a game about Pokemon Fire Red. I have only made choices for Charmander. And made the game up to Viridian city. Could I publish my game and still be able to edit it?

11 Jun 2018, 12:27Yes. But you need to republish it after you've made changes to it.

11 Jun 2018, 14:34And the players' save games will not get updated.

19 Jun 2018, 02:37Player saves wont be updated? How come? What if the change was only minor like no matter how much you and other play tested it, you still find spelling mistakes, or you want to add a picture to go along with a room. That update alone destroys all saves for your player base?

19 Jun 2018, 03:51Yep, in most cases. That’s why I download pretty much every game on here. There are some work arounds that some authors have come up with but I cannot give advice on that.
In X3, I am coding “cheats” to jump forward to certain spots in the game in case I must edit it and republish. I wouldn’t expect smaller games to worry about this however.

19 Jun 2018, 05:20But what makes a save break from something so nonsequential as a spelling correction or a photo or hyperlink added?
The Pixie
19 Jun 2018, 07:29When a player saves a game, they save everything. Everything in Quest is an object with attributes, and potentially all those attributes could change. So Quest saves the lot. In effect, playing the game is like editing and saving your own version of it.
When the player loads a saved game, Quest does not do anything with the original (or your revised version). It just loads the save game, because all the data is there.

20 Jun 2018, 02:39But people's games do not automatically update do they? I mean they have to physically make the effort to update the game themselves right? I could have notices for mine at least.
And can authors have two separate versions of the same game, like one with and one without the update?

Yes. You just have to create a new game ID in the GUI and publish that.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong here.

No. You need to publish (and upload for desktop).

20 Jun 2018, 12:21Wouldn't editing the game ID make a new game... or a gigantic error?

No. Quest treats a new game ID as a new game entirely. It can be identical (or altered) and it will appear as two separate games.
