08 Aug 2003, 14:32There is something I do not know how to do and it would come in handy for a game: how could you make a message appear in a sort of message box with an OK button to close it. A little like when you bring a menu or a Yes/No question, but only with a message in it. Thanks
P.S. I only have Quest 3.03

08 Aug 2003, 16:34It's not possible to do this. You could make a window pop up by using the help window, but that's not quite the same. Why do you want to do this anyway? Why not just have text print to the normal text window? I think pop-up messages would quickly get very annoying.

08 Aug 2003, 20:30When did you get rid of this feature Alex?
I remember a pop-up box, and being able to set it between old and Enhanced modes and getting a preview in the settings window - can't seem to find it now!

08 Aug 2003, 22:09You've never been able to pop up a "normal" message box (with just an OK button) in ASL. The "if ask" condition pops up a message box with "Yes" and "No" buttons.
Up to Quest 3.12 you could choose the style of all message boxes - those displayed by Quest and those that came up with "if ask". You could either have standard message boxes or so-called "enhanced" message boxes. These were a relic from the peculiar interface days of Quest 1.0 and 2.x really and were utterly non-standard and pointless. So I've dispensed with them entirely in version 3.5 and so you always get nice normal message boxes instead, which resize to an appropriate size and everything.
Notice how much nicer Quest is to look at now compared to the weird and wonderful colours of version 2. <shudder>

13 Aug 2003, 15:42I think a pop-up box is great to achieve a startle effect. Like Alex said, using it more than once in a game is risky. But imagine a character going to sleep.... you put in two pauses, then BANG! A popup box describing a nightmare appears. Close the box and wake up.

You can make a very passable equivalent by showing a picture that looks like a pop up box if you really must. There won't be a working 'OK' button but the player would still have to dismiss the picture.
Actually you could do it with text in the ZAP! - POW! Marvel comic style if you went this way - very startling.
