23 Dec 2004, 16:56i've started making a new rpg that i hope be become a mmorpg 8) . it's the classic fantasy world but with a few twists...
1. 'courage' and 'self-esteem' are stats that effect EVERYTHING you do.
2. when you die you become a ghost and you go to the spirit world, where there are cities and quests to be done, etc. and you can return to the real world as a ghost....
3. diseases can stack and effect you in strange, un-expected ways...
and many more ideas. i'd like to know what people think of these ideas and if they have and ideas they can give me. i have'nt made much yet but it's slowey forming. the playable races are: human, kath (cat-people), highelves, darkelves, hob'en (like hobbits) and shaedows (demonic creatures
).
it's also got a day&night cycle and weather system, where places have different discriptions at different times and conditions.
i'd like help most with:
- fantasy style names for places and people
- and any other tips for coding etc.

24 Dec 2004, 06:59Is this in Quest? If so, you've got yourself one hell of a job. If not, your still gonna be doing a lot of work. I think it's a good idea though.

24 Dec 2004, 17:30yeah im making it in QDK. i've put in a cool bit in the start that goes through scenarios to pick the best race and class for you along with your starting stats.... 8) it's single player ATM but who knows.. maybe it'll be the best questnet mmorpg ever (or the only one lol!

one prob: im trying to make it say, when you type score:

oh, and another: with the scenario intro it won't let me changes the 'race' variable if the player has picked an option and has a certain item!

26 Dec 2004, 07:29Sounds like a cool idea, but really hard, if you have different cycles and weather patterns that change room descriptions. Maybe it would be easier if you, instead of having day/night cycles and letting the players move back to rooms that you would need to change descriptions, would have day/night cycles, but in different parts of the game. Sounds confusing, but here's what I mean: Let's say you have a "Mansion," and the rooms are "Room1," Room2," and "Room3." And let's say you have a timer that after 2 minutes changes "Day" to "Night." Now, you would need to program the rooms so that if the player enters room, if timerx is on, display "daydescription." Otherwise, display "nightdescription." My idea is to have the whole time in the mansion be daytime, so you don't need to change descriptions based on day or night, but after the player completes that part of the mansion, move them to a deifferent part of the game, say, "the Basement," and say that now it is night. What I mean may be a little (or a lot) unclear, but I hope you undertand what I'm saying. Anyway, that's what I would do if I was making a game like that. As for help with fantasy-style names and places, if you'd like I can give you some. I read lots of fantasy books (Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" being my num. 1 fave series of all time) and have a feeling for weird names.

Then you just have the room description change according to certain times etc...

and that i cant get it to change the players race. once it is fixed i can get on with some serious hard core programming

26 Dec 2004, 23:16It would make life a whole lot easier if you would at least open the asl file in notepad, and copy the code into one of your posts. You don't need to look at it. When we're done looking at it, just reopen notepad and copy the new code into it and save it as mygame.asl for example. Looking at ASL code isn't the end of the world.

29 Dec 2004, 20:58You forgot to do anything when you gave the player the weapon choice... All it did was give a message, then move on to the next option.
I've put a string there, and set that to whatever weapon you choose... I've also replaced the if's, so instead of "if got" (if the player has an object) it is if ( # = # ) (if string equals value/other string).
Anyway, I've sent it back. I like some of that... Nice.

Even in QDK you sometimes need to use partial bits of ASL

30 Dec 2004, 12:55yeah i might try to learn a bit of asl but im quite used to qdk now and i dont like switching. ive searched long and hard to find quest when i was looking for a good program to write adventure/rpg games in.
cue praise for quest: i love quest as its easy to use and i didnt need to learn any code which meant i could start using it straight away, games were easy and quick to make and also fun.
im thinking of changing the 'shaedow' race to something else, but im not to sure what to. im thinking of a halfhuman-halfsnake creature: human to the waist down then a lond snake tail, and maybe four arms or something.
but if so what should i call them?
or do any of you have any ideas about a race?
i'd quite like it to be a magical/stealth evil beast race (half human, half animal demonic creation, etc.)

Oh, Sith - from Star Wars (saw a trailer at the movies today for 3 - very nice).
I stick with syth though - sounds nice and snake-y IMO.

normal colour of text is green, when you talk or if its inportant information (eg. name of someone/where) its in blue, others you talking that can understand yellow, and ones you don't (eg. other languages) red. (on a black background)
the code goes like:
the codes are all done right but and the colours change alright-ish.
when it starts the normal colour is a bright green. but after the code says to goto green again its a dark green! but when your taken to a new room it goes bright green again until the code for the colour chages!
am i doing something wrong? is it a bug? do i use a different code?
please help, my game's coming on nicely, as you can see.

it thought that |cb was the bright green as i had set it to the equivalent of black. and the |cl is blue, |cr red, |cy yellow, |cg is dark green not the standerd bright green.
i went through all my codes chaning the colours but i don't think i've got them all....
computer whizz / any one else can you go over my codes and check that everythings in the right colour.

So instead of |cbl (or whatever) you can type |x0000FF ... Although I have no idea about this.

You gotta remember that it's midsummer in Australia. So they'll presumably be having their summer vacation as well. They probably don't get such a long session in June/July/August as British and US schools get.

11 Jan 2005, 01:16A couple of things. Yes, I don't get such a long term in June/July/August. We get a 10 week term maximum here, even in private schools. Our holidays start around about the 10th of December, and end near the end of January. However, at my school this year, we get three weeks off instead of two weeks like public schools. So basically, for the standard school here, it's four 10 week terms, two week holidays in between, and a six-week summer holiday.
