Getting game back?

Still cranking the handle on this old PC, in the hope I can get it up and running.

If I do, and forgive this if it's as neive as I imagine, but if I copy and paste the code from my latest test upload, into a new Quest file, will it restore my game?

If you mean, can you take the code from the published .quest file and paste it into a .aslx file to edit with Quest, then unfortunately, not really.

All the code will be in there, and the game will run, but all the "editor" types will have been stripped out, and all the core libraries will be have been included into the file. So you'll have a lot of stuff in there that's not your code, and nothing will show up in the editor.

It's not that hard to remove the Core libraries - I've done it before for people, certainly not pretty though.

I tend to advise everybody I know that data doesn't exist until you've got a backup - I know that's not exactly helpful right now to OurJud though.

Mmm, shazbat!

I'm not sure I've got it in me to start from scratch. Ah well, lesson learned. It's just that a PC suddenly dying is the last thing one expects, so I didn't bother making any external backups.

As Alex said, it can be done. I'd be willing to take a look if you want to go that route.

That's very kind of you, Jay :)

Just let me know what you need.

EDIT: Never mind, what I suggested was dumb and didn't work (I just tried it.) I'm going to sit over here quietly while the smart people help.

OurJud, either attach the downloaded file or point me to where it has been uploaded. That will be the starting point. (You can PM me if you prefer not putting it here.)

This old PC is running so slow that it's pretty much unusuable at the moment, so I'm going to hang fire until it's made healthy. It's going for a wipe and re-build tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be back on track by then.

I got it.

It turns out I was wrong about something, which I'd like to correct here: despite having the "editor" types stripped out, the objects, commands, etc all show up in the side pane. I don't know if I just had that completely wrong, or if it's something that changed with a more recent version of Quest.

But regardless, it's not as big a problem as I thought.

The editor types just filter which tabs are shown when you select that object or room - you'll see just the object tabs, just the room tabs, or both. Without the type specified you'll see both object and room tabs for all objects and rooms.

This is because the Quest runner doesn't distinguish between objects and rooms - they are the same thing.
