Next version of Quest

What changes/additions/amendments should it have? A few I'd like to see:

* Easier adding/editing custom commands. Right now you have to go through a long and tedious process to do this. Why not just a single click?

* Less pop-up windows for advanced commands. Having a dozen or more open over the screen is too confusing, and it takes too long to close them down each time.

Anyone got other suggestions?

I think too every popup should have its equivalent in a normal text display so creator / user could choose to turn them on / off.

html format display instead of rtf could be good too, but Alex is thinking about this already...

A port to linux (even just console mode) would be really great... I think someone is working on it, but it must be difficult without the sources...

HTML is a lot easier to get your head round than RTF. It also seems for me more natural to use as most of the forums I go to use HTML.

Of course, what would be even better would be the kind of shortcuts you get in Word: CTRL B for turning bold on and off, CTRL I for italics... and so on. As well as that, shortcuts for adding/editing custom commands, adding items and so on.

i think it's all fine, HTML would be good, so would linux port, and Telnet support for Qnet at some point

Telnet support is already there, it just ain't pretty. Or wasn't last time I checked atleast.

I wouldn't mind less windows to go through either.

A built-in text editor is a must for the next version, with syntax highlighting as well. And as a couple of other people have said: A Select Case statement would do wonders for most game creators.

EDIT: Just had another thought: bg music, intro music, loss music and win music should be implemented.

You can do background music, win music... pick up a potato music, eat a sandwich music etc. already - just use playwav etc.

Quest 3.6 supports MP3 files too.

just use textpad. There is a download somewhere on the axeuk site which contains a file for syntax highlighting in Textpad

Is Quest 3.6 out yet? And just because textpad has syntax highlighting for ASL, doesn't mean I can do Select Case

If it was possible to directly edit code in QDK, it would be easier to code with it : for example if you're working in QDK and need to manually edit a part of the code (with textedit or whatever), you need to close the file and re-open it in QDK.

About porting Quest to other systems (Linux, Macintosh, Mac OSX), I've seen there is a visual basic to python converter : if it works, it means it would let more people play Quest (python is widely ported to other systems) :

does python have the same capabilities as VB does?

I think so. Moreover, python is object oriented, easy to read, widely distributed and used, well documented, open-source, and with the tk widgets you can have some well integrated interfaces. The only problem is that it's an interpreted language (like Quest is btw ;) ) so it's a bit slower to run than compilated languages. On the other hand some C or C++ programs can run portions of python's code, so they can add features of this powerfull high level language in them : ex Blender the famous 3D modeller can use python scripts.

C++ can support a Python interface. There are plugins i believe.

About new features in Quest, I think to be able to have an history for ALL the last player's commands by hitting the "up" key would be fine, especially when all interpreters for most IF systems have this feature. The F12 key is not really conveniant (it's not close enough, and people have the habit of using the up key), and limited (only one command is memorised)

Good suggestion - another one for that ever-growing "to do" list :)

About new features. During the writing of my game, which I've only been doing for something like 4 days, I've already come up with a list of 20 things that I think should be implemented or improved (and this list will grow). This list will be avaliable to see at the end of the game, whether you win or lose. When I upload the game I will post the list here on this forum, for the benefit of those who won't download my games.

[EDIT] On an unrealated matter: I'm about a fortnight away from using Quest for a year, and decided that I'm sick of that damn 15 second wait everytime I start QDK. So I've decided that I'm going to talk to my Dad about buying it.
