Player opinions wanted

19 Jan 2013, 16:34So, in this game, you start in your bedroom, which is important. From there, you need go to another location. I created the rest of the house, basically, with a few things you can do that are not important to the plot, just to keep it from being completly boring. I am trying to think of things or puzzles for each room, either mini-puzzles for bonus points or a way to make it tie into the plot. Am I wasting time doing this? I feel like it would be weird for a player to go from their bedroom to outside or another location with nothing in between. What is your opinions?
Also, Where can I get ideas for naming the game? I am terrible at coming up with a name that pulls players in.

Is it to reach a location (some room), like a maze with puzzles to solve to progress?
2. As for puzzles, what type of puzzle game do you want?
Do you want the puzzles' solutions in-of-themselves to be the challenge, or do you want the puzzle to involve trying different stuff in order to solve the puzzle (if this latter option is case, then ya, having "dead ends and~or useless stuff" are good as you don't want the answer to be clear) ??
some examples of games you might want to look up (albiet, I don't know what you exactly want your game to be like or to do with it, as I need more information about your game idea):
Maniac Mansion for the NES (well I played it on NES as a kid)

King's Quest for the PC
(you can download a remake of King's Quest V from Quest, hehe)
and many more such games for examples too.
3. Name? well, I'd need more of a description and~or details of what the game is like, what is it's story and~or plot, etc etc

19 Jan 2013, 19:08It's quite normal to pick up items in one room that are used later in another room. With this in mind you could place a cut-throat razor in the bathroom, or a knife in the kitchen, that would eventually be used to kill the monster in the garage, for example. You could find a book on the bookshelf in the study that reveals a map that would be used once you're in town... and so on.

19 Jan 2013, 19:13and if this, what demonboy said, is what you want to do, then you need some "junk~useless" items too, or you wouldn't have as much of a challenge.
when you use items (or doing stuff~actions) for solving puzzles, then you need to make some "dead end" items or stuff~actions, as it would be like having a maze with only a single (and obviously correct) path, not a very hard maze to find your way through, lol. You need some diversions and deceptions to throw off the player, and make him think a bit more. If every item or stuff~action is used for something, then there's no or hardly any challenge at all.

19 Jan 2013, 19:36Thank you, all of these responses are incredibly helpful!
in order to win the game you have 2 objectives 1) prove you are not the murderer/find the real murderer, 2) collect points. you actually cannot beat the game without reaching at least a certain score, and your score directly affects a good portion of interactions. i.e. a lower score means certain npcs won't even talk to you, or you won't have access to certain locations. I am creating the game play by a mixture of story, clues on the real murderer, puzzles on how the real murderer made you look suspicious which you will then have to disprove the evidence, earning points by successfully choosing an item, doing an interaction, and even gain score with some funny actions. Then I am filling in some spots with mini-puzzles that won't stop you from being able to win, but are fairly entertaining anyway.
I hope hope hope this game is a success. I got the idea from another (non text adventure) game, and altered it to be my own idea (so im not just copying some other game) and i m adding the stuff in MY game that i felt was missing or didnt liek about the game that inspired me.
last but not least..i can't believe king's quest V was turned into an adventure. I am SO going to play that today while i take a break from uilding my game, king's quest V was one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE games! ty!

There's lots to think about here, though not all will apply to any given game.
