Where Do I Download Free Sound Files For My Games?

I am looking for sound files for anything and everything. Short sounds, long sounds, redundant sounds, special sounds, etc. From birds chirping to cars driving by. I have searched the net as well, although I am not too keen on just clicking on unfamiliar sites.

I know some where, just not where (Either here or the wiki...) that states some places to download from freeware sites or open property license sites or something that you can use legally in your games. I think Youtube and Vemo (I think that was the name.) was two, but what about for pictures and sounds? I forget the name or link and did a search, but came up with 16 pages to look through. Also are there more that you guys know about that you had not mentioned? I know I can search for sounds and pics normally, but you gave specific sites with some kind of free use policy or something.

I'm afraid I can't be too much help here, as I tend to just foley my own sound effects if I need them. The only thing I can recommend is googling something like "free sound effects" or "public domain sound effects" or "royalty-free sound effect", although that last one won't guarantee the sound effects themselves are free, just that you don't need to pay royalties if you use them in something commercial.

A good start is with http://www.grsites.com/archive/sounds/ although some are poor quality.

Another one is with http://www.freesfx.co.uk but you have to register with them and credit them if you use their effects see http://www.freesfx.co.uk/info/eula/

Thanks! However those links do not look like the ones I had read about on here... or at least that I can remember. I will be sure to check them out, but if you know of any more please post them. Also I will check using those key words as well to see what I come up with. Thanks again!

I plan on using some of my own sounds, but to be honest, the ones I am really wanting I simply do not have the kind of mic to get it and or I simply do not have an authentic way of making it...

This place I may have mentioned before: http://www.freesound.org/

They have an API which it might be nice to integrate at some point.

Thanks! I will have to check that site out. I know I tried a soundforge or something like that and it was more for stand alone products than actual sounds, more music or sound makers for different operating systems or at least that is what it appeared to me anyway. And then other sites popped up in searches, but I did not click on all of them. And what is an API although I am sure it is way above my head.

Yeah, Soundforge is a software product for audio editing. I learned how to use it in college.

This site has quite a few good sound effects. To download them, click the link and right-click the player that pops up. It's pretty obvious from there. :)http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/domestic_sounds.html
