Constant freezing
manikin
04 May 2012, 06:20I was just starting with Quest 5, it seemed like a very easy to use program.
Unfortunately it seems it tends to freeze constantly,
to the point that it is an absolutely arduous task to make the simplest of changes,
the problem typically arises when i try to open a drop-down menu.
Sometimes i have to kill the program and restart it many times before it can even get further than opening an object,
given enough time it also seems to be enough simply hovering over a button with the mouse for it to freeze.
When it doesn't freeze sometimes it takes several seconds before buttons and text-fields respond,
and the program is using around 50% of my CPU. I don't know if that's normal, but it seems a bit much.
I didn't find any similar threads.
Is there something to do about it? or do i give up?

04 May 2012, 11:48Is this when playing a game, or when editing one?
Some people have had problems which have been resolved by reinstalling Internet Explorer, so it may be worth giving this a go.

04 May 2012, 19:16There are no issues with playing games, just editing.
Though i haven't really been playing any games except when testing my own.
The thing is it sort of freezes randomly for no apparent reason,
like there is some process interfering with the program, making it unstable.
Maybe there are some windows files i'm missing or something.
Does the editor use internet explorer for something?
Because i use Opera.
But if internet explorer has anything to do with it i guess i'll try reinstalling.

05 May 2012, 11:19Could be a graphics driver problem maybe - try updating your graphics card drivers.

05 May 2012, 20:17I did, then i tried hovering the mouse over the copy, paste and cut buttons
and it still froze after a few seconds.
i've tried downgrading and upgrading the Quest version too.
Too bad, it seemed so promising.
Anything else to do?
Or are there any other programs like it?

06 May 2012, 07:08Maybe if you could provide more information about the specs of the system you're running it on, we could help better? I.e. Quest versions tested, os, ram, video card, hd space, etc.
I'm running Quest on a modest dual-core laptop with integrated video, windows 7 x64 and 4gb of ram and I have never experienced this problem with any version of Quest I've run...
As for similar products, the only one I know of that's remotely similar to Quest is ADRIFT, but it's not as good in my opinion. Besides that, there's Hugo, TADS, Inform, etc.

06 May 2012, 22:48AMD athlon 64 dual core, windows XP, 2 GB ram, NVIDIA Geforce GT 220,
something like that.
I have 120 gigabytes of hardrive space left so there's no shortage there.
First i downloaded the stable version, when that started to malfunction i downgraded to 5.0 i think,
and then switched to the latest unstable version, with no discernable change in behavior.
Maybe there are some damaged or missing windows files somewhere that messes with the program?

06 May 2012, 23:45It really sounds like a graphics card problem to me. The Editor uses WPF which is hardware accelerated, whereas the Player doesn't. Do you play any 3D games on your computer - I wonder if you get similar freezes. Could even be something like dust in the heatsink on your graphics card - I got weird freezes in Windows once, cured by clearing all the dust out of my computer.

09 May 2012, 02:57Thank you for your support so far, jolly good and all that.
I'm not sure about the dust.
I have played 3D games between the attempts to use Quest, some quite demanding too,
and i haven't had any problems that i can think of.
No other applications seem to be malfunctioning.
If it's the card i should think it's incompatible, in which case there isn't a lot to do.
I don't think i'll get any further, unless anyone else can think of something.
But if i dust of my graphics card i'll try Quest again.

09 May 2012, 10:22Have you tried using the web editor instead of the downloaded one? That might solve your problem.
