Editing ASL in QDK and a text editor at the ame time
mandmwest
15 Dec 2003, 04:37I have just begun using QDK. While I love it for some tasks like defining rooms, objects and entering descriptions I find that I am still more comfortable using a text editor to enter/edit script commands, ect.
Being cautious I have been using one program (i.e. QDK), saving my file, closing that pogram, then opening the other progam (say textpad) loading the ASL, editing, saving, closing, and so on.
Does anyone know if both QDK and your text editor can both be running the same ASL file at the same time without causing problems. I did try it and to my suprise I had the same file open, made changes in both, saved both and then checked and both changes were there.
I can't help thinking though that this could cause some sort of problem but opening and closing back and fourth gets really old.
Thanks

15 Dec 2003, 07:29You can't use both and have both changes take effect. It's impossible since they both over-right the old file with the changes made (unless you have a good text-editor).

15 Dec 2003, 13:40actually this IS possible with Textpad 4. What happens is, if you have the file open in textpad, save changes to the game in QDK, then click on Textpad screen to make it active, it says something like "this file has changed, load updated version?" or something like that, then when you click ok, it loads up the updated stuff which you previously saved from QDK. clever huh?
Only problem is, any changes made in the textpad file, then saved, wont be automatically saved in QDK, so you will need to reload the game in QDK again.

27 Jan 2004, 18:38Hehe, here is yet another thing that would make a great feature in a future version of the QDK, an imbedded text editor that works synonymously (sp?) with the QDK.
We need to get a wishlist up soon
Although, I don't expect it any time soon, seeing as how the last version came out kind of recently.

)...
And QDK doesn't work that way, it stores it differently in RAM than it saves it to disc... Saying that I don't know why there couldn't be a "text mode" that it switches to (just like saving it but to a text window instead) and then back again to GUI mode afterwards (loading it back up again)....
Having an error coming up with a message box and then returning you to text-mode so you can correct the error...

some wysiwyg html editors provide such a feature, your can either modify in the source window or in the display window, and the other window will update at the same time.

24 Feb 2004, 06:07I would support a built-in text editor for QDK. Maybe Ste and Alex could work in combining Ste's ASL Editor and QDK. Maybe Alex could add some more features like an automatic add room with a wizard that lets you set the properties.
