About implementing music/sound

I'm still in the pre alpha stage so adding sound to my game is everything but around the corner.
However, when that day comes, I know I will want to score the game as well as adding sound fx in certain situations.

So my question is a general one aimed at all of you who has previously incorporated sound in your quest games.
What kind of formats are available?
Does it support MIDI? (not a huge fan of midi but if I want to score every scene that might be the only possible way to avoid big file sizes).

What's your general impression of working with sounds/music in quest?

It supports whatever formats your web browser can play. That probably includes MIDI, but there may be some browsers that fail at it.

I love sound effects, but not necessarily music, especially music that loops or sounds the same throughout. Snippets here and there are good, but as background music... no thanks. Just my personal opinion.

I've tinkered with sounds in X2 and Good Night. In Good Night, I really liked it because the game was short enough that it wasn't distracting or repetitive. X2 is huge and I implemented sound effects here and there... it was okay but because it wasn't kind of... constant? it didn't work quite as well.

I think it largely depends on the overall play time of your game. X3 will have no music or sound effects. Also, you seem to anticipate this already, editing out or compressing the sound file/quality was a pain in the a$$ when it came publishing time (X2).

Good luck!

@mrangel Cool, thanks!

@XanMag Yes, with the 20mb limit I'm expecting to run into problems.
As far as taste/opinion goes I'll most probably add a choice to turn music off in the game. So the likes of you don't have to hear it. =)

Because of the size limitations mp3 is a really great option, (and if you are American and haven't been using them because of licensing on the format, all patents ended in 2017 so you are good to go).

Edit: I didn't know we could use midi that will be much smaller

@J_J No, I'm Swedish. And I haven 't tried with midi yet but it would be cool it it worked. It would give a whole lot of freedom.
Edit: Not completely sure yet but MIDI doesn't seem to be working. Hope I'm wrong.

@K.V. Wow, thanks! I'll look into it straight away!
