Show Picture

Is it possible, when calling the "show Picture" routine, to declare the location that the picture will open at? For example, along with the size of 320x200 call out the x,y coordinates you want the upper left corner of the picture box to appear on screen? (hope I worded this OK).
Thank you
Roy

As far as I know, no it isn't possible. If it's not in the manual then it's not implemented. It may be a decent idea for Alex to add, however.

Why do you need to do this? If you wanted to do this to move the picture away from the Quest window, bear in mind the Quest window could be anywhere on the screen, and people have widely varying monitor resolutions.

OK. I see your point. I'm new, so I'm learning as I go. I was thinking more of orienting it within the top part of the Quest window, with the text continuing to be displayed and visible at the bottom.

Being able to partition the Quest window into areas for text and graphics is already a planned feature for a version some time in the future (hopefully the not too distant future).

OK. Thanks, Alex.
I am working on a game, and am learning as I go, so I sincerely appreciate the help, and the program.

BTW Alex - on the subject of pictures... Have you found a way to integrate pictures into RichText boxes?

I remember readin somewhere about copying the picture bit-for-bit and then pasting it into the RTB... But I couldn't be bothered to even think about it (because I'm not into graphics myself).

I am also wondering if you could cheat by copying the picture and pasting it into the actual RTB (because you can actually paste a picture into the box). I should really experiment some but I only spend about 5 minutes on it before giving up...

I'll take another look into it. I couldn't find an easy way to do it before but there are probably ways.

are we talking about inserting pictures into the message box? if so, why would you wanna do that? lol

I'm talking about the "rich text box"... Richtext just means it has details about the font (size, colour, bold, underline, italic, font type) making it "rich".

The richtext box in Quest is the one where everything APPEARS - giving you all the feedback.

The box is supposed to be able to hold pictures (because if you drag-and-drop... Or copy and paste a picture) into the richtext box (I don't think it will work in Quest) then the picture actually DOES appear...

I remember that the way I looked at was talking about byte arrays and stuff like that - I just can't be bothered to go through all the loading, converting it into a bitmap, storing THAT, then putting it into the richtextbox one pixel at a time....

The way html handle images seems to be easier than the rtf (it's directly linked to the image in a folder). Html is fine too for displaying bold, italic texts, colors etc.
I guess html tads is based on a html browser, so why couldn't Quest be the same ? (just a suggestion)

its a text-based engine, why do we need graphics IN the message box itself? fair enough, a nice skin to go over the top would be great, but....images in the text box itself? nahhhh

Alex

I've looked into using an HTML box in place of the RTF box for Quest before. It's certainly a possibility but it's a fairly major change, so it's one of the things I'll be looking at as a possibility for Quest 4.0.

why did people used to put miniatures paintings for decorating letters inside thir manuscript ? Why do they make books with illustrations inside ? Why do clipart exists ? And letterines ? There must be enough "fool" people around here to find it's normal to mix text and graphics.

Well no - not really... It just saves having to close a pop-up window all the time when a picture DOES come up...

I guess having the picture appear in the help box could be nice - having it dissappear after a certain time or something. That would be OK IMO.

ASCII art is great for images in text-based games...

goto Games & Chat -- ASCII Art for more great ASCII art

Erm, I remember way back in the day's of playing text games on my Acorn Electron (erm, BBC Micro anyone....) where you typed in "fill bottle" and got "with what?" as a reply.... You could also type "picture" and got - guess what? A picture!!!

I'm guessing the picture only had like 16 different colours, but it was still a picture. Now there is nothing wrong with wanting a couple of pictures in text-based games, it allows the game creator to come closer to what they want to achieve. ASCII art is nice sometimes - but that requires that the player use a certain font (which they may not have) and a certain size - then if you want colour in there you need to add in all the codes for that too. Using normal .gif pictures are brillient and VERY small.

ASCII art is good for little maps (if you're using a game like that) but not really for getting a picture across... Plus what's the point in having an ascii picture instead of just the .gif picture? Less quality/detail and it's a picture non-the-less... Having ascii art pictures is just as bad as a normal picture file.

you should see colour ASCII, and somebody made the matrix scene out of ASCII too. all animated and in text. excellent stuff.

Yeah - so ASCII can move now? I think not.

And you can't have colour ASCII - ASCII doesn't include any colour information.

What you're talking about is RichText art - which is bloody pointless because it's probably larger than a GIF file.

Plus i'd HATE coding in all those colour changes into Quest (or anything personally).

Ok, see, that's not ascii art making it move, it's a script in the webpage going through a sequence of images made by taking screenshots and loading them into an ascii conversion program. So basically, some guy who can't make ascii art himself but had a little know-how with javascript or something, made something utterly retarded to impress uber-dorks such as yourself.

Looking at the source, it appears he just used some premade script.

This little animation was done by hand :

Can it be considered pure ascii art ?

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a list of 255 characters which include no colors, animation, etc. If you took that animation, froze it, and stripped it of all colors, then it would be ASCII art. The letters themselves are ASCII, but that is it.
