05 Jul 2003, 15:31My *new* battle engine is coming along well. Anyway I got an Idea for a type of battle system thing, and a way to do it.
here is my Little example thingy. Its going to be in acsii, anyway let me show you:

# 0 0 @ #
# 0 0 0 #
# K 0 0 #
# # # #
#=wall
@=player
0=nothing
K=monster that starts with a K
Anyway: it would say something like this: You are standing in a square room.There is some sort of K moster to the SW.
and say the player has a bow and a sword. He could shoot at the monster and supose it said something like:
>the arrow whizzes past the monster's head
>now the monster is right in front of you.
and then the little map type thing would change to:
# # # # #
# 0 0 @ #
# 0 K 0 #
# 0 0 0 #
# # # # #
so the player would attack it with his sword. It would say something like this:
>You hit the K monster with your sword causeing 84 points of damage, killing it.
Y'know, kind of like nightmist.

05 Jul 2003, 15:50I actually was having a similar idea to this last night when plotting out more of my battle system. I wasn't thinking of doing it in Ascii, personally it just makes me think, "Oh man, some ascii crap, this is gonna be stupid."
Besides that the basic principle was there, the same about nine "squares" allowing for the player to strafe leff or right.. "east" or "west" same thing... but I eventually decided against it and to instead just keep an engagement system, but to change it a bit to allow for better group dynamics(ie: yeah a system kind of like you are saying would allow for group formations and such, but with a such a small area for rooms, things could get crowded on that ascii chart real easy and making it much bigger would just get irritating).
I don't know how to vote, my personal opinion is no it's not that great of an idea, but atleast it's a decent one. Unless you were going to go through all the trouble of making a co-ordinate based system for combat, it wouldn't be worth it in my eyes.
