Needed Improvements

15 Jul 2008, 00:40A: The cost. 40 bucks? Are you kidding me? Why so freaking expensive? Could it really be that valueable to you? LOWER THE PRICES!
B: The direct feature to upload music/sounds. Text adventure is cool but why not any sound exept the generic voice for the "speak" function.
C: Record your voice instead of a generic one. WHY?!
D: More "If" capabilities. Sometimes Quest just does not have what i need.
E: More Features. Oh common this is great but its missing ALOT. Ive used a free text editor and it more stuff than this yet it sucked so hard...
F: Improved Sophistication. As in, WHY IS QUEST SO FREAKING STUPID AT TIMES??? Why doesn't it run scripts with no problem?!
G: QuestNet and Quest. WTF? WHATS THE DIFFERENCE? I played online mode with both games i made! Single AND Online.
Ive gone too far..point is, there so much to improve on right now! QDK and Quest is cool right but seriously. Alex, I think you can do better job, no offence. This Rendez, signing off!

15 Jul 2008, 10:19Firstly, stop wining, you sound eight years old. Seriously. Grow up.
A, Very expensive... but not really. Alex has put a lot of hard work and effort over the years to make quest. and now you say he can't earn a bit of money from it? Shame on you!
B, Why not upload the game and all it's external files to your own site so people can download them all and play on their computer? Or provide a link on the text adventures site to those files so people can play the game without them or choose to have the sounds and pictures too...
C, What?
D, Quest can do most things, you're probably not using a good method to do what you want though, and that's not Quest's fault. Using ASL and not QDK generally makes it easier to do complex things though.
E, Love the grammar and sentence structure there. Care you give examples of the features you think Quest should have?
F, Why not post in the 'creating games' forum with your specific problems? It's most likely you're trying to do something in a weird way.
G, QuestNet is the server, it runs the game. Quest is the client, and many Quests connect to the server, QuestNet, to play together.

15 Jul 2008, 11:11A, Yes, I am sure that Quest is that valuable to Alex. You deserve a kick up the rump for that comment.
B, I agree. A direct way for sounds AND images would be helpful for us mental retards.
C, You can do that yourself with the use of mike and Windows Sound Recorder.
D, Pfft. Comparing the games you have uploaded on the site to the actual good ones, I would say that your the one who doesn't have what it takes.
E, This is the same question as D.
F, don't blame the game, blame the player. Or in this game, don't blame the script, blame the writer.
G, um, yeah. What Elex said.
Damn straight. Looks like another GAMER! or dther99 has come. Ugh.
As for the rest of that scramble of caveman text, for someone who doesn't even have a basic grasp of the english language you sure seem to know your biz. Please, do better than Alex has.
Please don't sign back on.

09 Oct 2008, 02:49Despite any improvements or amendments that could be made I don't think paying $40 (what's that, £ GBP 21 ?) is too
expensive at all for the amount of work that must have gone into coding QDK.

13 Oct 2008, 08:50Considering that, last time I checked, implementation of "and/or" and of "set" was still poorly thought out / buggy, I disagree.

14 Oct 2008, 03:17Thats 2 things. How about concentrating on the strengths of the program instead of picking apart its weaknesses.
Freak
14 Oct 2008, 10:39What strengths? As far as power and flexibility goes, Quest is nothing to Inform or TADS; as far as ease of use goes, it's outdone by ADRIFT.
As long as Quest uses ASL as a distribution format (and he's drastically changed it recently, CAS is just a mildly obfuscated version of ASL), any flaws in that foundation will ultimately be carried upwards. And ASL is quite flawed; what I mentioned were symptoms of the fact that Quest uses highly duct-taped methods to parse an ASL file. It combines the human-friendliness of assembly language with the computer friendliness of a high level language. Quest was "designed" with very little thought towards consistency; properties, actions, scripts, and directions are all handled in completely different ways.
The save format is a mess; it stores all property changes ever made, even if they are irrelevant because of later changes. By storing just changes from initial state, it also assumes that the result of starting a game is strictly deterministic, which is not true.
Again, what strengths?

15 Oct 2008, 04:27For one, it can be used by people with 0 coding experience, such as myself. I downloaded the others, tried em, didn't like em. I am not trying to get into a big debate over which program is the best, just that perhaps you shouldn't dwarf it compared to other programs, especially in the programs own forum.
davidw
15 Oct 2008, 04:55Adrift can also be used by people with zero coding experience and is considerably easier to use, so what's the advantage in using Quest? (And from my attempts to write games with Quest over the years, you'll end up debugging the source code so often due to one flaw or another that knowing how to code is pretty much a requirement anyway.)

16 Oct 2008, 12:03I didn't think it was necessary to state this at the time, but my original message was in response to:
Quest is (to my knowledge) the most expensive IF development system currently supported. It's 10 years old, which is plenty of time to get the bugs fixed, and I'm talking about pretty fundamental bugs. SAVE / RESTORE doesn't work correctly. In a game that's been going on for some time, the system will take increasingly long to save, and larger games will frequently hang while saving. Even when SAVE does complete, I've often had games RESTORE to a different state than they were saved.
The authors of the other systems also had to do lots of work on their systems, and they produced systems that work correctly and are more powerful.

wow, hate to bump up a old post but i just now read this one.
A. $40 is more then worth it, Believe me I looked all around and used countless programs text game makers and graphical ones and
this one is the one I use the most, the best Graphical one in my Opinion is Game Maker pro, thats $20, but working with graphics
is time consuming so by far Quest is the best one I found, I already got my $40 worth, also Alex has put allot of work into Quest, without
his hard work Quest would not exist and I'd be stuck with something like RPGMaker.
B. A Feature to upload sounds/music would be neat but you do not need it, just put the sound/music file in the folder where
the quest game is and have the game call it, simple and logical.
C. not sure what you mean here, so i wont say nothing about this one.
D. The IF capabilities are pretty good, added features would be nice but what there is now shouldn't be
nothing to get upset about, just post in the request forum.
E. Quest will always recieve new features in updates.

F. There is sometimes error messages, not often but they do arise, it can get annoying but Quest is
always being improved upon.
G. I cannot answer this one either, but i can say i never played a solo game online before, also questnet is
a server and it does work, i've used it.
Sometimes you just have to work with what you have not what you want.

that threads need to be closed after 2 weeks if these are in fact the rules.

18 Jan 2009, 15:24Necro... Dead.
So effectively "Necroposting" = "Posting to Dead Topics" ... Or "Posting forum entries from beyond the grave"... I don't think the second is possible ....... yet.
It's a bad idea to bring back old forum entries when it doesn't actually further anything (the discussion's long since dead concerning it) especially since the people concerned have probably walked away.

18 Jan 2009, 21:52Um, there's no 2 week rule here... just a matter of judgement really. If it fits in an old topic, post it there. The only time I get annoyed with people posting in old threads is when their post doesn't say anything in particular.
