Quest in PC Plus magazine
Alex
12 Mar 2008, 12:46Quest is on this month's PC Plus coverdisc in the UK (Issue 267, April 2008). You can get a full copy of Quest Pro 3.53, and there's a special offer for upgrading to Quest Pro 4.03.
There's also an article "How to write text adventures" a few pages after the coverdisc - oddly enough it's all about Inform, but there's some good info in there as the advice is pretty general.

...
Well, I found this program on the disc and joined the forums today. Im really glad that they put it into the magazine (otherwise I wouldn't have found out about it) but I would like to mention that the version on the disk supplies all the extra files for "typelib" but not the actual .qlb (when I try to run the typelib example the program crashes and says that the "typelib.qlb" file is missing) and that there doesn't seem to be any tutorials that came with it (apart from the help file and arena.asl) . Is this correct or did the software installer not work fully on my computer??? (Im sorry if this is the wrong place to mention it, but it IS related to the magazine I guess)

18 Mar 2008, 19:30I think it was omitted from the Quest 3.53 setup file. However, it is included with Quest 4.02 - the trial version is also on the coverdisc, so if you install that you can copy over the typelib.qlb file.
There's no tutorial for Quest 3.53, but the help file should explain everything about the various QDK windows. A lot of things are pretty similar in Quest 4.02 though, so I'd recommend checking out that tutorial to get started.

18 Mar 2008, 22:44Welcome Jayjay, if you have any problems just post on these forums and some-one will help you. I tend to check every day to every other day and answer pretty much every newbie question I can, as I like helping new people. I'm not so good with QDK, but can look up the menu structured way of doing things if I have the time to look for things and refresh my memory where everything is hidden. Hope you enjoy Quest as well...

19 Mar 2008, 17:28Ontopic: Ok, it works now, thanks Alex. I was worried my disc was corrupted
Offtopic: Thanks also Elexxorine, I have a feeling I might end up asking for help understanding this program/language (but the tutorial provided with Quest 4 should help alot).

25 Mar 2008, 13:56Hi JayJay / All
Just a brief observation if I may. I wrote TYPELIB.QLB (in its various versions) a LONG time ago to address shortcomings in early versions of Quest 2 and subsequently revised it for Quest 3. It was intended to provide functionality that was missing in those early incarnations of Quest.
With the advent of Quest 4, TYPELIB as last released is pretty much redundant and I discourage anyone from using it. It must be remembered it was a workaround (by necessity pretty much a kludge in lots of ways) and most of what it did is now built into Quest. It served its purpose, but it is no longer needed.
Best of luck with your projects!
