21 Aug 2007, 22:34Who's writing the text on the front page?
Elexxorine
22 Aug 2007, 11:15I wrote the first few lines, the second part is from the quest homepage. Why?
davidw
22 Aug 2007, 12:35You should probably have had someone run it through a grammar check for you before uploading it.
Elexxorine
22 Aug 2007, 12:36lol. If you want to actually help and not just have a go then fine.
davidw
22 Aug 2007, 12:37No offence intended, Elex, but a wiki littered with errors like that one isn't going to make anyone take Quest seriously.
Elexxorine
22 Aug 2007, 12:39Alright then, tell me where I made mistakes?
Alex
22 Aug 2007, 17:40Sounds like a good idea, but I have a couple of reservations:
1. "put together by the people of axeuk" - surely you mean the people of the axeuk forums? 'Cos I'm the only person of axeuk, see...
2. If you're going to copy and paste from my website, can you please at least acknowledge the source and that it's quoted?
And since it's a wiki, why not just make it public rather than password-protected? You can always revert any vandalism, just like most other wikis do.
Thanks
Alex

22 Aug 2007, 17:48I see the "put together my the people of axeuk" has been fixed, but the "Here you'll find loads of codes and methods" still grates. From a quick glance at the rest:
"No programming knowledge necessary, A full tutorial is included, reference guide included for Quest's more advanced functions, create single-player or multi-player games."
No capital A needed there, unless you're going to break it down into sentences. Which might be better actually. As it is, it's one horrible run-on sentence. Quite a few similar problems to this.
The biggest problem, though, is the lack of explanation for what most of the stuff does. Assuming I was new to IF, would I know what "watch variables" or "view timer information" or "inheritance of object properties" meant?

22 Aug 2007, 18:17Tell Alex that, cos the second part is from the axeuk website.
Alex, I'll put a thing saying you made quest on it.
Also, I cannot get rid of the password. It's 'lollypop'!!!!

22 Aug 2007, 18:47I'll be correcting the majority of grammatical errors, as well as adding new materials within the next few days. Don't bash it yet, davidw. It's only a single person trying to do what nobody else has bothered to attempt yet. Not to mention the wiki is new.
Elexxorine
22 Aug 2007, 18:48Why don't you try make it better if you don't like it, rather than you slagging it off? Huh?!

22 Aug 2007, 23:05Hey Elex, Slayer, etc...
I was going to report some grammatical errors, respectably. I hope to gain insightful knowledge from the site and plan to add in some code. I have a proof-reader's mentality, and it disappoints me when I read grammatical errors. I'll check the page in a few days and kindly report and edits that are necessary.

22 Aug 2007, 23:12Thanks you very much, Witchy. This is what the wiki needs. I do try not to make mistakes but I still do now and then...

23 Aug 2007, 06:18Nice to see you take criticism so well, Elex. You ought to finish off that uber epic RPG you're always talking about and enter it in the IFComp. You'll have a field day then.
paul_one
23 Aug 2007, 11:23The game's multiplayer, and I don't think it's quite in the IFcomp style.
I can't believe WW is commenting on his feelings about grammar, while I think I've seen errors in almost every post.
As the password is above, I'm sure we can all correct problems and add our opinions.

23 Aug 2007, 12:02Yeah. I'm not entering into the IFcomp. One because it's multiplayer, and I don't want to. I'm having fun with it. Yes, I've been working on it for over two years, but I've built a whole 'engine' on top of QuestNet to make it decent. I also don't plan to make my game last under two hours. I have put the game on hold many times, I know, but every time so far I have picked it back up when I have the free time to work on it. I tend to put my real life before this, as getting good qualifications and a job is important.
Btw, Davidw, where's your uber epic RPG?

23 Aug 2007, 19:11There you go then... At least I'm making a uber epic RPG.

23 Aug 2007, 19:45Really? Last I heard you said you'd quit.

23 Aug 2007, 22:45I added to the Wiki... kind-a majorly.

24 Aug 2007, 00:05Thanks loads Witchy! I like how you've put things, if you want to add any more, feel free.

24 Aug 2007, 13:08While all the work on the front page is nice, isn't it more important to actually put in some content?
Elexxorine
24 Aug 2007, 13:46Feel free to add what you wish (as long as it's quest and helpful to others). I personally shall not be adding anything until the HavenHold engine is complete, and I have turned it into a mega-library so others can use it.
davidw
24 Aug 2007, 17:41So you've created a single page of text for the Wiki and are now not going to add anything to it at all until some RPG engine you've been working on for years and shows no indication of ever being finished is ready?
Wouldn't it have been better to hold off the Wiki until you actually had something to add?
Wouldn't it have been better to hold off the Wiki until you actually had something to add?
Elexxorine
24 Aug 2007, 19:58No, because others can add to it as well. Also it not 'showing no indication of ever being finished', it's come a long way. I'd rather spend several years and do a proper job than spend one afternoon doing it and have it crap.

So let it be written, let it be done... more has been added :}

24 Aug 2007, 22:49For the status variable tutorial, I suggest adding
- the relevant windowshots
- the relevant ASL
or both.

I don't think either are necessary, since a person using the tutorial will know what the window-shots look like because they'll be using QDK. I don't think the ASL is necessary either, since after they follow my directions, they can open a text editor and view it themselves. Thanks for the reply though.

I don't think it would be proper to go into a page of someone's lesson and screw with it. If a contributor has qualms with a portion of someone's offerings they should relay their concerns to the author of that page as Freak has done. But for the sake of keeping this Sticky to the core of its concern, they should PM or email the person.

Why don't you just lay off Elex. and keep this thread for discussion about the Wiki?

Very little that appears on a Wiki is "necessary". It's there for flavour and because people find it interesting. It's there to show people what a system is capable of and why they should be using it.
A decent manual for Quest isn't necessary, but if someone wrote one it might encourage people to use it.

In that same line of thinking, we don't need a tutorial at all because the people reading that will already know how to use QDK!
Having the ASL as a file or 'snippet' (or both) and the window-captures are good ideas because - and let's get this straight - PEOPLE FIND IT EASIER TO SEE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

You've just taken the whole point of a wiki - which is supposed to be a 'community' website, edited, adjusted, and improved by a whole group - and just ignored it.
Not to mention that any detrement to a page can be 'rolled-back' to an earlier version and the imposing person banned (of course - it seems on the public wiki you'd need to change the password and give out the password to a few less people next time).
