QDK 4.0 trial-version Disappointment
witch wyzwurd
14 Feb 2007, 17:02I downloaded trial-version of QDK 4.0. No programs running during download and installation. I click icon on desktop to run QDK 4.0. I get "Run-time error 384 - A form can't be moved or resized while minimized or maximized". I press ok. "Illegal operation" box appears and shuts down Quest. Aaargh!
Why?
Also, on Q4, why was the "Help"-link located below the Quest logo removed? It'll be harder for players to find help, especially if they're not familiar with Quest.

15 Feb 2007, 09:30Not sure why this is happening - I don't think I've had any other reports of the same problem.
Can you please try the following:
- Click Start, then Run
- Type "regedit" and click OK
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Quest\Editor
- Delete the "State", "MainHeight", "MainLeft", "MainTop" and "MainWidth" settings
- Try starting QDK again
Please let me know if this works for you.
As for the help link being removed in the Quest player, this information is still easily available from where most players would expect - the Help menu at the top of the screen.

15 Feb 2007, 18:19I had a full message here, but the spam-check erased it. I've noticed that pressing the back button no longer brings me to my last message, but a cleared screen it does aaaaarggghhh!
I'll type it again. DAMN SPAMMERS!

15 Feb 2007, 18:32AGAIN.....
That worked, but when I went to create a new game, I realized that QDK was taking up the full screen height, so my task bar buttons weren't displayed. I pressed the maximize button (as in one box mode) in the top-right corner of the screen, which caused the "error 384" pop-up box to appear. I pressed OK and the box disappeared, and QDK didn't shut down. Now QDK didn't hide my task bar. As a test, I pressed max-button again (as in double-box mode) and my task bar was hidden again, but no "error 384" pop-up box appeared. Toggling the max-button caused QDK to hide and show my task bar, but no "error 384" box appeared again.
Why did I have the previous problem anyways?
Why is QDK acting this way now?
As for the "Help" link: I don't understand why your sacrificing the ease of the location of the Help link for a select audience, especially since it wasn't obtrusive before. Also, I've noticed that you've eliminated the About link and swapped it for the Quest logo. Although that'd a neat idea, it'll be harder for people to discover, and I don't think you should be put in the background, Alex.
Speaking of backgrounds: I've noticed that the Help menu's background-color can be altered, and I thank you for that. :}

15 Feb 2007, 19:04Scratch some of that! The QDK screen appears bottomless when task bar is available or when it's not. And the "error box" will reappear with the "illegal operation" box following it, causing QDK to shut-down. Just not every time I hit the max-button.

19 Feb 2007, 13:18I can't reproduce this problem on Win98SE.
Are you using any software to automatically maximise windows, or anything similar?

21 Feb 2007, 16:32No I am not using any special software, but I have noticed that when I change my screen size that the browser window (for any program or internet) doesn't expand to fit the full screen correctly (on my ancient laptop). So I figured I'd burn a copy of the trial version and put it on my desk top (which isn't internet accessible), but when I connected my external burner to my laptop, the laptop blitzed out, and I no longer have my laptop, which means I no longer have access to the internet. I'm on a library computer now.
I'll get back to you on this when I get the trial version downloaded and put on my desktop, which might be a while, since I don't know anyone that has access to the internet at the moment. I'll ask some people I know. Shouldn't be too hard.

03 Mar 2007, 09:42Ok, I'm back on the internet Alex. I found a PCMCIA to PCI adapter and it works. I downloaded the trial version of 4.0 and went thru the steps I did on my laptop. The results follow...
1. Inline images appear fine (no white line) -- that has something to do with that one image I tried... sorry.
2. Text appears below image (I don't know why it didn't on my laptop).
3. When screen resolution is at 800x600 I still get Error 384. At that resolution the Quest tabs don't fit nicely within the window space; they're cut off at the bottom and some radial buttons and other tools can't be seen.
4. When screen resolution is at 1024x768, the Quest tabs fit snugly in the window size and the error 384 is eliminated. Have you tried changing screen resolution to see if you get the error? I haven't had any problems with any other programs concerning this on my desktop.
P.s. Still using Windows 98se; it's a damn shame!

06 Mar 2007, 12:17Hey Alex,
New post above.

07 Mar 2007, 11:26Thanks. I'm still not able to reproduce the error message on Win98SE at 800x600, although you're correct that the windows do not fit easily on the screen at this resolution.
I'll see what I can do to make QDK to work properly at 800x600. In the meantime I recommend setting your resolution to 1024x768 or above.

07 Mar 2007, 13:05Ok. I'll do that. Still can't understand why I get the error message. I just re-installed Windows 98se too, so I know that all components are downloaded to my desktop. Hmmm, what could be the common denominator. A missing dll or something? Did you try downloading the trial version from your site to see if it has something to do with the file?
Alex
08 Mar 2007, 15:38I've done a bit more testing and I have now been able to reproduce the error message.
This is now fixed for version 4.01, and QDK will work at 800x600 resolution.
