.exe's?

05 Sept 2003, 23:38I believe there is that option, but you need to pay Alex to do it...

06 Sept 2003, 02:02Really? You can get exes... After you pay, do you get unlimited?

06 Sept 2003, 10:19What CW is referring to is a custom build. A basic build with no additional features or changes would let you create an install file for your game, and people could download it and install it in the same way as any other Windows application and launch it straight from their Start menu or by running the EXE file.
With a little bit of work you would be able to reuse your custom build for other games if you wanted, but it depends under what conditions I've sold you the custom build in the first place, as the price depends on if you're going to be selling your game, how many people etc. If the second (or third, fourth...) game still comes under the licence for the first then there's no problem, otherwise you'd have to renegotiate.
More information is at http://www.axeuk.com/quest/custom.htm , and send me an email with details of what you need if you're interested.

06 Sept 2003, 18:24Btw when one has the Quest Pro, is it allowed to create oneself a custom build (using an installer program) and include the Quest player ? Or can we only distribe the game file (ASL or CAS) ?
Alex
06 Sept 2003, 21:51Well it's not really a custom build - a custom build is an EXE file which is tailored to you. What you're describing is putting the normal Quest EXE and an ASL file in your own setup. This is really not something I recommend - you will very likely omit some files that Quest needs. If you want to redistribute Quest, you can only do so using the original Quest download file, e.g. quest312.exe from http://www.axeuk.com/quest/download.htm . If you want to do that, that's fine, though if you're just distributing via a website it's easier all round if you just include a link to that page, and then all you need to do is give a link to your ASL or CAS file.

06 Sept 2003, 23:45Well, this is kinda offtopic, but...
Is a *.cas file really compiled? Or is it just uneditable. Because compliled programs go faster than uncompiled.

07 Sept 2003, 01:55They're neither!
Alex calls them "compiled" because they are turned (encrypted) into files that Quest can run while normal people can't see the source code.
So technically you can and can't call it compiled - all up to your POV.

Writing from the downstrairs computer.....
