Hosting games on free platforms (blogs, etc)

15 Nov 2016, 16:45Because of how ugly the games page on places like IFDB, itch.io, and here are, I would love to host my game elsewhere. With a Quest game that's not really feasible because of the file type used, but I'm currently using Twine to build my game, and these are saved as simple html files.
I've just had someone on the Twine forum tell me, categorically, that I could use WordPress for this, so I've just spent the last hour setting up a WordPress blog only to find when trying to upload my game's hrml as a tester, that they don't support such a file format for uploading.
So I'm back to square one.
Aside from having my own webspace, does anyone know what, if any, options I have to host my game somewhere that gives me control over how the intro/launch screen looks?

15 Nov 2016, 17:16Hi there. That was me. Apologies again for misleading you. I honestly thought they'd offer similar features on wordpress.com to the self-hosted version of the software.
That said, you realize itch.io gives you control over the looks of your game page, right? There's an Edit Theme button at the top when you're logged in, and the official site policy actually encourages you to use it. And if the customization options aren't enough, you can always embed just the game into a blog you have elsewhere.

15 Nov 2016, 19:15Hi, felixp. No harm done, and now thanks to your embed clarification the WordPress blog works exactly as I intended!
I'm not going to bother explaining the process (unless specifically asked) because all this refers to games uploaded to itch.io, and I'm not entirely sure they take Quest games.

16 Nov 2016, 02:00This is what I have now, and I'm very pleased. The words 'Coming soon' will be replaced with 'Play' once the game is finished, and clicking the link will launch the game right there in the browser.
I know many of you will be wondering why I was so determined to do this, but I really don't like the look of the dedicated game hosts out there. I'm also aware I'm robbing myself of the publicity these game hosts provide, but I can live with that and if needs be I can host it here, too.
Just shows what a little perseverance can do.

17 Nov 2016, 08:07To get a Quest game running on your own site, you would need to have the Quest web player running on it, which probably means having your own server. I believe it is possible, but not simple and would involve some costs.

17 Nov 2016, 22:43Yes, just to clarify. My game is being made with Twine and is hosted on itch.io, who provide a special 'browser' embed code which allows you to launch your game from your own site/blog.
