one thing ive wondered....

if it goes from 3.12, why didnt it goto 3.13 or 3.2?

The difference in number indicates how big a change there is between versions. So, 3.13 would have meant a few bug fixes, and perhaps a minor feature or two. 3.2 would have meant a few new features, and 3.5 indicates more than that. It's completely subjective of course.

ahhhhhhh

i thought it all meant that 3.0 was a lot of feature added, then 3.1 would be a few major bug fixes, 3.12 would be some minor bug fixed, 3.2 would be some more major bug fixes, and after its mostly bug free, you would work on 4.0 lol

but yeah i get it all now

Well, the releases are:
major . minor . something....

Major for a big change, Ie replacing the way the program works in alot of ways, making it faster, more efficient etc...
Minor for smaller changes. One forgotten feature, maybe making it faster, maybe some bug fixes.
Something for bug releases and minor things, maybe looks, maybe extra shortcuts to features already available. I look at this personally as unreleased versions as well as bug fixes.

But as Alex says - completely subjective by all programmers, although there's probably a norm out there somewhere!!

I doubt there is a norm at all. I don't even think it qualifies as subjective. Subjective implies some sort of pattern or logic, I say that it's all made up BS.

If you want to release a QUEST V3000 ULTRA EXTREME LEGENDS!!!! It's completely up to you. All programmers make their releases according to whatever the hell they feel like, if you look at a lot of programs you'll see that.

CloneCD is a good example, man, they've got like 9 decimals going in a build and the very next build will look entirely different, older builds are more modern looking than new ones.

Subjective is an understatement, non-sensical and dependant on a creators sanity level seems like a better description.

#cough#.... :?
No pattern? Usually a PC program increases from V1 to version 2 to version 3 etc... And they follow each other, 1 then 2 then 3 - not 3 then 1 then 2 then 8 then 15 then 2.5 then 6...

Yes, you could release a Quest V3000 ULTRA EXTREME LEGENDS but it'd probably still carry a certain release version, perhaps 4 perhaps 5.... Maybe even 3000.... But still after that I seriously doubt you'd go to 2000 ULTRA MEGA RELEASE STAR SMASHER.... Just carrying the 2000 would put people off IMO!
Actually if you look at alot of programs they'll be pretty similar with Minor changes, pretty different with Major changes and only have bug updates with Revision changes (the 'somthing' from my above post). :!:

Yes it may be longer than 3 decimals, but that doesn't change anything...
I could have a release 3.2.456.3245.532 but that doesn't mean it doesn't follow a rule - the number increases, and usually by how much you change the program by.
The reasons behind the certain decimals are different for each programmer but there are usually two rules:
1. The placement decreases in importance (ie 3 (V - important) . 34 (Less important) . 342 (lower importance) etc...)
2. The number increases...

A name is totally different to a version number!!

That post was just the beginning of a long string of bad posts that went wrong to create havok  .

Anything I post in the next couple of weeks is basically to be largely ignored because I..... And now my will is so low I can't continue with this post - meh, maybe another time.
