I can assume that a huge percentage of you here use windows in some form or another as your main operating system, but I'm interested as there is a project that I'm starting shortly, and I'm just wondering what people here use. :?:

Edit: I forgot to say this in my post before, I use linux and I'm going to write a port of Quest (and possibly QDK when I have the time :D ) for the Linux operating system. I'll post more news about it when I've done more of it. :)

Wowwwwwwww ! :)))))

it'd be wonderful !

I managed to make Quest running on Linux using Wine, but to achieve that one must have mswindows installed on another partition, otherwise it won't work :(
I personally don't think QDK should be ported to Unix/Linux, and I think Alex would prefer to keep the "commercial part" of Quest on mswindows, unless the QDK version on Linux would be commercialised.

On the other hand a parser for playing games would be very beneficial for the Quest "community". With such a parser, several ports of Quest could be made : one in console mode, one in graphical mode etc. (like ports of frotz for console, frotz for X window...)
Maybe Alex could help about such a parser ?

This way the huge interactive fiction community who swear only by *nix systems would consider Quest better. And also maybe some new libraries for Quest could be made by them...

Tell us more about your project, and if you need a beta tester, you know I'm here ! :)

I think Alex wouldn't mind about a port of Quest - maybe QDK...

Then again I don't think it's out of his reach to do it himself - the only thing is he would have to re-write it all in C++ or something... Also learning how to use all the new stuff too - and the (personally) unfriendly API in linux...

Thanks very much for the response everyone. If you're wondering, I did get permission from alex before I posted this.

Primarily, I want to make the Quest engine (parser) for Linux and then implement it within a shell environment. If that all goes well, I might consider doing a version for X-Window/XFree86.

I did manage to get Quest running on via Wine on my main system but I got some errors, etc.

If the linux version is a success and there is enough demand, I'll probably do a Linux port of QDK.

As for beta testing, I'll release a beta version on the forums when I feel I'm ready to.

as far as I'm concerned, at the beginning only a console mode would please me much :)
Will it support formatting like bolt text, italic and such ? I guess also "menu" modes will be turned into a list...
And later, if you want to include graphical and sound support... well, it will be a huge work...
Maybe you could post your plan on the int-fiction list if you want to have some support...

Good luck.
