27 Sept 2003, 05:23I don't know, I somehow have an impression that the type of games they like in the IFcomp are survival-y mystery games. I had a few ideas that could be thrown together, if only for the sake of showing how versatile Quest is, but I've been caught up with stuff(the biggest of which not being around my home/pc to code).
Am I right about the survival/mystery type games though? When I think IF in competitions I always imagine the "Private Dick, with a deep inner monologue trying to make sense of a murder"/film noir, type plots.
I'm more of a fan of classical fantasy and don't really think it would appeal to a lot of people(judges), even if it had a quite dark(not a "I wear all black" ninja fanboy type stuff) edge to it.

As far as I can see, it seems they especially enjoy games without heroic fantasy content in it.
So here are some ideas for next year :
- you're a spy coming back home. Some agents are against you, but it's not the real problem. You have to deal with your psychological problems before all that, and also your PC has got a virus.
- You're a shop keeper, and have to sells pumkins to old ladies. But your teddy bear has some psychological problems.
- you're in your space ship, it can't get off, and you need some oignons to feed your engines.
in a nutshell : try to be parodic, fun, avoid maze, avoid fantasy, avoid maze, and be avant-gardist. (and avoid bad english)

28 Oct 2003, 08:23IFComp? Interactive Fiction Competition.
As far as IF games go it's the biggie, although this year's total of entries has been quite a bit down on recent years. Not a single Quest game making a showing. Then again, last year's solitary Quest game hardly did the system any favours so that's probably just as well.
The Comp's currently being judged now although I think that to judge you have to have submitted your request to be a judge prior to now. I'm a little hazy on the exact rules for judging because as I've written a game I'm not eligible to judge them.

30 Oct 2003, 22:14That sounds crazy! You mean that knowing how to write a game (or having written one) makes you inelligible to Judge one? Weird.

30 Oct 2003, 22:59I don't make the rules but I agree they're a little extreme.
I guess it's so you don't get people entering a game and then giving every other game a rating of 1 so their own game comes out tops.

30 Oct 2003, 23:08That's it - just making a game/whatever doesn't stop you from judging. If you have an entry it stops you from being a judge.

31 Oct 2003, 08:40The IFComp's homepage is at http://www.ifcomp.org/ but the time to submit an entry passed by about a month ago. The entries are currently being judged although as I said before I'm not sure if you can still judge them now.
The IFComp runs every year so now would be a good time to start writing next year's entry. No Quest game has ever done well in the comp - indeed, last year's sole entry was the lowest ranked game of in the comp - but hopefully next year that all might change.
